How do we attract these heavenly creatures into our garden? By choosing the best hummingbird feeder (I will review top 8 later in the article) and by educating ourselves about hummingbirds in general. Let’s find out what type of food should we give them, what do they eat in the wild and much more.
What Do Hummingbirds Like to Eat in the Wild?
Hummingbirds enjoy eating spiders and all kinds of insects and they are awesome as a pest control in your garden. But of course, they are known for eating nectar from the flowers. Protein that they get from eating insects is very important; however, they require sweet flower nectar, because it gives them energy. If you want to attract these beauties into your garden you need to offer them a diverse diet. And by doing this you may attract more than just hummingbirds.
What Can I Give Hummingbirds?
Like I already mentioned, their favorite food is Nectar and it is the best choice to offer. The cool thing about it it’s really cheap and easy to make. You’ll only need 2 ingredients: ¼ cup of white refined sugar and 1 cup of boiling water. You just mix those two until sugar is dissolved. After it is cooled down put it in the feeder and just wait for the hummingbirds to come. This is a recipe that mostly resembles nectar that they get from flowers. If they don’t go for it right away, try putting a piece of fruit below the feeder to tempt them to eat the nectar you put out for them.
Hummingbirds unlike most of the other birds do not like to eat mealworms from the feeders but nevertheless, you should try to attract as many insects into your garden. Do not worry, hummingbirds will hunt and eat all of them, and fruit is also great for attracting insects. If these wild birds can’t find any nectar source or insects they’ll sip from the tree. Or from the holes that woodpeckers have carved into them. Trees in the garden will definitely enhance your chances of attracting these beauties.
Hummingbirds need to eat some grit because it helps them to digest food. Although you won’t attract them by leaving some sand or ash near their feeders, you’ll absolutely help them to maintain a good health. Some people think that they can just leave something sweet for birdies, and that’s enough. The truth is it is extremely dangerous and birds could get sick if you do that.
What Foods to Avoid When It Comes to Hummingbirds?
- Fruit juice
- Sweet drinks
- Corn syrup
- Artificial sweeteners
- Rotten nectar

Where Should I Put My Hummingbird Feeder?
Hummingbirds are huge lovers of shiny objects and bright colors. Make your garden irresistible for them by putting brightly collared objects around it. Make sure that your feeders are set somewhere where hummingbirds can notice them and that they can get to them easily. If you have other bird feeders in your yard, try to keep them as far away from hummingbird feeders as you can, because they could get scared by larger birds and choose to not get back on your property. You should always make sure that your feeder is set in the shaded area. There are 2 reasons for that:
- To stop the wind from moving it too much
- To stop the nectar inside from leaking when it’s too hot
If you are a cat owner, it can be quite of a challenge to attract hummingbirds into your garden. I, unfortunately, do not have a garden but I do have a cat, and god forbids if a pigeon flays to my balcony. My Wish keeps all insects and birds away.
If you want to know how to cat proof a balcony, you can read it here. Anyways try to teach your cat not to go near the feeders. And speaking of feeders it best solution to use few different styles of feeders which will allow hummingbirds to pick their favorite feeder and it’ll encourage harmony in your yard since they won’t be fighting over the territory. Be patient with them and you’ll see them coming back, just make sure the nectar you put out for them is always fresh.
Dish Feeder or Bottle Feeder?
There are 2 types of hummingbird feeders, dish and bottle feeder.
- Dish feeder is easy to clean. It is also easy to use, and it doesn’t have as many leaking issues. You just pour the nectar into the dish, put the top back on and wait for the birds to come.
- Bottle feeder or vacuum feeder looks like a bottle and that’s how it got a name. Nectar is held in the tubes above feeding ports and that amount gets decreased as the birds eat it. They may look more beautiful than dish feeders, but they are also much harder to clean, and they also have a problem with leaking. It is the best to try out both styles and next time just get the one that works the fest for you.
Bigger Is Not Always Better
Nectar goes bad within five days. You’ll be wasting most of your nectar if only just a few hummingbirds visit your garden. My advice to you is that instead of getting one large hummingbird feeder, you get few smaller ones and to space them out across the whole garden. This is also a great way to prevent a fight over nectar.
